Promoting animal welfare and respect for animals were the issues under discussion at a talk organised by the Run Run Shaw Library and the Centre for Animal Welfare in the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 15 March.
During the event, Dr Richard Brown
, Associate Director of SVM, talked about definitions of animal welfare and related concerns about pet welfare.
Since animals were sentient creatures, their ongoing welfare meant not only mitigating against maltreatment but also ensuring that they were both physically and psychologically healthy, he said.
For example, animals needed decent living conditions and to be treated well to make sure they didn’t suffer mentally.
The talk was the second in the “Animal Welfare Series 2016” presented by the Library and the Centre for Animal Welfare.
There will be 10 talks in the series, with the next one scheduled for 13 April. The title is “Companion Animal Welfare Ethics”.
