About 3,000 alumni, students, faculty and staff at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and their families enjoyed a variety of fun-filled activities at the “CityU Homecoming Gala 2014 cum 30th Anniversary Closing Ceremony” on 30 November.
Under the theme “Beautiful Life”, “CityU Homecoming Gala 2014”，organised by Alumni Relations Office，was a perfect finale to the celebratory events for the 30th anniversary.
In his address at the closing ceremony, Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, Council Chairman of CityU, said 2014 had marked not only the 30th anniversary of the University, but also a year packed with action and achievement.
Celebratory events had showcased CityU’s development and accomplishments over the whole year, he said. Highlights included the 30th Anniversary Kick-off Ceremony at the beginning of the year, the 30th Anniversary Banquet in November, the Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony, the Cultural Festival, the exhibition on scientific and art works for Antarctica expedition, local and international marathon races and a sustainability summit.
“The biennial CityU Homecoming Gala strengthens bonds between CityU members, and this year it marked a perfect ending to the celebratory activities for our 30th anniversary,” Mr Hu said. He said he hoped CityU would continue to scale new heights through its dedicated efforts over the next 30 or 50 years.
Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, said the University had developed many outstanding professionals and leaders in various sectors over the years, and their outstanding achievements had made significant contributions to the advancement of society, university and various industries.
CityU alumni actively participated, too, Professor Kuo said, offering constructive comments and donating generously to help set internship awards and student exchange scholarships which make a difference to the development of students.
Expressing his gratitude to alumni for their support to the University, Professor Kuo pointed out that “CityU Homecoming Gala 2014” demonstrated the versatility, diversity, harmony and caring spirit of the CityU community.
Guests attending the closing ceremony included Professor Arthur Ellis, Provost of CityU, Professor Roderick Wong Sue-cheun, Vice-President (Development and External Relations), Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President (Research and Technology), Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Vice-President (Student Affairs), Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration), Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff , Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Deputy Chairman of 30th Anniversary Organising Committee, Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Alumni Relations), Mr Clovis Lau Koong-yep, Chairman of the Convocation, members of CityU’s Council and Court, honorary fellows and honorary graduates.
One of the highlights at the gala was a celebrity sharing session on “Beautiful Life” hosted by Dr Elizabeth Wang Ming-chun, acclaimed artist and Honorary Doctor of Letters at CityU, Professor Frederick Ma Si-hang, former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR government, and Mr Shih Wing-ching, Director of Centaline Group and Chairman of am730. During the session, they shared their life experience and philosophy with participants.
Other activities included alumni sharing, guided campus tours, sport activities, exhibition for quality living , exhibition of student programmes, game booths, workshops on parenting, karate, taekwondo, Japanese tea, plus a reunion lunch and dinner.
