UK students join CityU environmental conservation programme

Two senior secondary students from schools in the United Kingdom (UK) tasted university life for the first time during a summer school programme on environmental conservation at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) over the summer.

Jennifer Thorpe (lower left photo, right) from Arthur Mellows Village College and Taiyba Aftab (lower left photo, left) from Nottingham Academy were sponsored by the Hong Kong Government after winning a competition titled “Hong Kong: A Dream Destination for University Study”.

They joined a marine conservation project under the guidance of CityU tutors specifically to learn more about environmental preservation in Hong Kong. They also helped out with the summer school programmes at the Ocean Park that educate young children on marine conservation.

In addition, the two UK students attended talks on understanding forensic science and activities such as building bridges with spaghetti at the College of Science and Engineering Fun Day alongside local secondary school students.

Both Jennifer and Taiyba said that the CityU programme helped them better understand the importance of environmental conservation, and that they relished the chance to experience university life in a different culture.

The programme was held from 14 to 27 July at CityU.
