As part of its commitment to social responsibility, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has launched a major campaign to encourage the University community to reduce and recycle into fish feed food waste produced on campus in order to help create a greener environment.
To support the Cutting Food Waste Campaign that began in March, all student canteens and staff restaurants have introduced flexible food portions, while the western restaurant City Top has stopped serving the buffet salad bar. In addition, the Chinese Restaurant has created six low-carbon dishes.
The University has been collaborating with a recycling agent since August to process food waste into fish feed. This measure has the benefit of reusing food resources through recycling and minimising the amount of food waste dumped into Hong Kong’s limited landfill space.
An activity on Food Waste Management at CityU was held today (26 September) to enhance awareness about reducing food waste. Guests attending included The Hon Leung Chun-ying, Council Chairman of CityU, Professor Way Kuo, University President, Professor Arthur Ellis, Provost, Mr Gabriel Chan Sai-man, Chief Administration Officer, Professor Johnny Chan Chung-leung, Dean of School of Energy and Environment, Dr Cheung Chor-yung, Dean of Students and Mr Lui Ping-hon, Principal Environmental Protection Officer, Environmental Protection Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
